Safe Streets. Strong Neighborhoods.

“Our neighborhoods are under attack and I want to fight to protect them.”

“The gains we made in the 90s — when I served on the Council — are being eroded. Developers have more clout at City Hall than our neighborhoods. Police and library services have been cut. High density projects are being shoved onto single family streets.”

“With your help, I will fight to reform City Hall and give our neighborhoods a greater voice at City Hall.”

- John Hartley

In 1988, John Hartley led a successful drive to win power for neighborhoods through District Elections. Elected to the Council in 1989, John increased police services to make our neighborhoods safer. He created an Office of Neighborhoods and gave communities a greater say in local development. His Office of Small Business advocated for small business inside City Hall. Hartley also formed the Human Relations Commission and developed programs for kids.

For the past two years, John Hartley has served as Co-Chair of Partners for Safe Neighborhoods, going door-to-door to organize Neighborhood Watch and fighting for more police funding. “The city has cut police and closed police storefronts,” says Hartley. “But, at the same time, the city has managed to find money for downtown and for sweetheart deals for the special interests.” “It is time to reorient the city’s priorities and put public safety in our neighborhoods first.”
